12 Social Media Marketing Tips

By Carolyn Rhinebarger

1. Social Media posts live forever. If you wouldn’t want to see it on the cover of the New York Times, don’t publish it.

2. Quality is more important than quantity. Don’t limit yourself to those with a lot of followers, friends and connections.

3. Don’t use Social Media to reinvent your brand. People should get the same experience with your company offline and online.

4. Be human. Social Media is about connecting with others, not pitching to them.

5. Be genuine and authentic. People connect with real life experiences.

6. Conversely, be cautious about choice of words and voice. It’s a reflection of your business.

7. Maintain consistency with avatars and profile images. Use your logo or use the face of the president but don’t do both.

8. Create messages that resonate by knowing what topics are under discussion.

9. Messaging in emails, blog posts, direct mail, advertising, etc. should be unified and support each other.

10. Don’t be afraid to let clients and prospects communicate with each other. It’s better to be a part of the conversation than to have it occur without you.

11. Understand that you cannot control the dialogue. People will bash you or your brand whether you participate or not. Overwhelm them with positive messages.

12. Be sure you have the time to devote to Social Media marketing before you begin. Abandoned blogs, facebook pages and twitter send the wrong message.
